How to Use LastPass 101 - Password Management

LastPass is the Gizmo approved solution for managing your credentials. From Wi-fi passwords to health insurance information, you can rely on LastPass and your Neighborhood Nerds for safe and secure storage of your sensitive information!

Prerequisites: Access to the World Wide Web, a LastPass Account

Estimated Time: 20 Minutes

Expected Outcome: Members will be experienced with LastPass understanding how to store passwords in the form of notes, create folders for groups of information, and share and unshare folders with others.

Tools Required: Laptop (Recommended), a phone can be used

How to Create a Shareable Folder

  1. Login to LastPass 
  2. In the dashboard, click on the Sharing Center tab on the left hand side, and then click Add Shared Folder (Plus sign in Bottom Right Corner) to create a shareable folder. 
  3. Label the Folder. We recommend giving it a title that relates to whatever will be inside the folder (Example: Wifi Password)
  4. You have now created a shared folder that we can add passwords into and share later

How to Create a Secure Note (Store a Password)

  1. Click on the Secure Notes tab on the left hand side of the dashboard, and then click Add Secure Note (Plus sign in Bottom Right Corner) to create a secure note. 
  2. Give the Note a Name (Example: Wifi Password), and add it to the shared folder you have just created.
  3. If needed, you can give the note a type or category, but often the generic type will work.
  4. Add all important information into the text box and save the note.
  5. The note should now appear in the Secure Notes Dashboard under the folder you created earlier.

How to Share a Shareable Folder with a LastPass User

  1. Click on the Sharing Center tab on the left side of the dashboard
  2. Hover your cursor over the folder you would like to share
  3. Click Manage
  4. Navigate to the left side of the popup screen and find the section labeled Invite Users or Groups
  5. Type the email of the LastPass account you would like to share with (This will be provided by the Nerd who is helping you at the time you need it)
  6. Make sure to only check the box labeled Read Only as the Nerd will need to see the password
  7. Click Save

Note: The checked boxes for “Read Only”, “Administrator”, and “Hide Passwords” can be changed on the right side of the popup once the folder is shared with the Nerd.

 

How to Remove a LastPass User from a Shareable Folder

  1. Click on the Sharing Center tab on the left side of the dashboard
  2. Hover your cursor over the folder you would like to remove a user from
  3. Click Manage
  4. Navigate to the right side of the popup screen where there is a list of users
  5. Find the user you would like to remove
  6. Under the Action column, click the X that is in line with the user’s name
  7. Click Yes in the next popup screen

Note: Since you will have admin privileges, always be careful that you Do Not Erase Yourself from the shared folder.
