Generally speaking, this issue stems from the application having been run for a long time, without any soft resets. There may be something just slightly wrong in the background preventing the correct operation. To rectify this issue we will "kickstart" the application by performing a Force Stop and by Clearing Cache.

Steps to Perform a Force Stop
- Open the device's Settings application
- Select Apps & Notifications
- Select the blue option that says See all ### apps
- Find and select the Gmail application from the list
- Select Force Stop
- Reopen the Gmail application and check the Outbox
- If Force Stopping the application did not work, follow the steps below to clear the cache
Steps to Clear the Cache
- Open the device's Settings application
- Select Apps & Notifications
- Select the blue option that says See all ### apps

- Find and select the Gmail application from the list
- Note that Steps 1-4 for clearing cache are the same as a force stop
- Select Storage
- Select Clear Data
- The option may be labeled Clear Cache
- The option may be labeled Clear Cache
- Reopen the Gmail application and check the Outbox

If the problem persists, we recommend following the steps outlined in the following article which addresses a lengthier method of disabling and re-enabling Gmail Sync: https://www.rightinbox.com/blog/gmail-queued
