How to get back Outlook Autofill

Outlook usually automatically fills in email contacts, sometimes this list is deleted or no longer working, this Gizmo Guide will show you how to remedy this situation!

Prerequisites: Outlook, Windows and Apple Systems, Outlook Contacts

Difficulty Level: Member • Nerd • Platypus

Estimated Time: 15 minutes

Expected Outcome: Autofill once again is Available

Tools Required: Outlook

Steps to Perform

  1. Double check that Autofill in Outlook is turned on
    1. Go under “File” and then click on “Options”

    2. Click on “Mail” in the left hand toolbar and scroll down to the “Send Mail” tab. Then make sure the checkbox next to “Use Autocomplete List” is checked.

  2. Once you’ve made sure that is checked, if it still isn’t working you’ll need to clear your RoamCache folder in Outlook.
    1. Under type here to search, type in “%appdata%” and then hit enter
    2. From here click on “AppData” in the top file directory
    3. From here double click on the folder titled “Local”, the scroll down and do the same thing for “Microsoft” and then “Outlook”
    4. Right click on “RoamCache” and rename it “RoamCache_old”. This allows you to keep your previous cache file for later use if necessary.
    5. When Outlook is reopened a new RoamCache folder will be created that should allow your Autofill to work once more.
  3. If none of these options fix your autofill, then you may have to manually re-add the contacts by sending an email.
    1. In Outlook 2013 and newer autofill for contacts only occurs when an email is sent to that contacts
    2. First click on the “Send/Receive” tab and select “Work Offline”. The option will be greyed out when it is on.
    3. Then create a new email and click on the “To” option to open up your Outlook contacts.
    4. Once there click on the first contact, the scroll down to the last contact and shift+click on the contact. This will highlight all contacts. Then click on “To” and hit “Ok” to add them to the message.
    5. Find the unsent email in your Outbox and delete it
    6. Now the email won’t send, then go back and turn offline mode off

      Your contacts will now autofill!
