How To Generate App Passwords

Several email companies are requiring specialized app passwords for third-party services, i.e. Apple Mail or Outlook.

Prerequisites: Email address, Original Email address server login information

Tools Required: Web Browser, Internet


Steps to Perform

  1. For Gmail
    1. Go to “https://myaccount.google.com/?pli=1”. Alternatively, click on account under the 9 dots on a Google webpage
    2. Next you will need to click on “Security” and Scroll down to “Signing in to Google”
    3. Select “App Passwords”, if this option is not available, you may need to turn on 2-Step Verification, you’ve turned on Advanced Protection, or isn’t available due to being set-up by an organization.
    4. Select the App type and Device and then click “Generate”
    5. You will need to copy that code and use it as the password for your mail app.
  2. For AOL Mail
    1. Login to your AOL account on AOL.com and go to your Account Security Page, or use this link “https://login.aol.com/?done=https%3A%2F%2Flogin.aol.com%2Faccount%2Fsecurity%3F.scrumb%3D0&src=mc
    2. If logging in, click on account user icon and then go to “Account Security”
    3. Once logged in click on “Generate App Passwords” or “Manage App Passwords”
    4. Select your app from the drop-down menu and click “Generate”
    5. Once generated copy the password and use it as the password for your mail app.
  3. For AT&T or Bellsouth Mail
    1. Log in to your AT&T account and go to your Profile
    2. Then click on “Sign-in Info”
    3. Select the email you want to generate an app password for.
    4. Scroll down to “Secure Mail Key” and select “Manage secure mail key”
    5. Select “Add Secure Mail Key”
    6. Enter a nickname for the key and then select “Create Secure Mail Key”
    7. Copy the password and put it as the password for your mail app.
  4. For Yahoo Mail
    1. Sign in to your Yahoo mail account, click on your account name, and go to “Account Security”
    2. Click “Generate App Passwords” or “Manage App Passwords”
    3. Select your app from the list and click “Generate”
    4. Copy and paste the password
  5. Currently, you can’t generate app passwords with Hotmail
