How to clone a disk

!!!WARNING!!! This guide assumes you know what you are doing. If you do not understand what you are doing DO NOT DO IT! Data loss may accrue

Prerequisites: Bootable media with Clonezilla

Difficulty Level: Member • Nerd • Platypus

Estimated Time: Dependent on disk size/speed

Tools Required: Bootable Clonezilla media, PC with applicable disk connected

Expected Outcome: Your disk will be clonedScreen Shot 2020-03-27 at 5.00.45 PM-1

Steps to Perform

  1. Boot into Clonezilla
    1. Choose your language and keyboard layout at the prompts then choose "Start Clonezilla"
  2. Select "device-device" to clone one disk directly to another
    1. There are other options which are not covered in this guide but the process is very similar
  3. Choose beginner mode. This option will work for most use cases
    1. If your disk has bad sectors or your clone fails, choose Expert mode and select the -rescue option from the first advanced parameters prompt and Use the partition table from the source disk from the second advanced parameters prompt
  4. Choose disk_to_local_disk
  5. Choose your source disk from the prompt
  6. Choose your target disk from the prompt
    1. !!!!ALL DATA ON THIS DISK WILL BE LOST!!!!
  7. Choose -sfck to skip disk checks during clone
    1. If you choose to check and repair the filesystem during the cloning process you will have to monitor the process to answer any user prompts
  8. Choose your desired action once the process is complete
  9. You will be prompted twice to confirm you want to erase all data on the target disk. strike y to continue
